The unique Penthouse is named the “Newspaper Row” paying homage to the building’s historic past. In the late 1880s, the riverside of the 300 block of Camp was called “Newspaper Row,”
since several of New Orleans’ major newspapers and other publications such as the Daily Picayune, The New Orleans Item and the Times-Democrat were located here. The tight cluster of aggressive journalists made for a bustling and colorful atmosphere, one that sometimes boiled into brawls and shoot-outs. Mostly, though, the row buildings were filled with diligent journalists, editors, typesetters and workers intent on meeting deadlines and surviving in the fiercely competitive market. As for Newspaper Row today, we are fortunate to retain most of its old buildings and its history.
